FOR SALE - 1940-1969 Vintage Watches...
Benrus - (circa 1940s) - Super Overall Conditioned Calendar
wristwatch with a Day Window below the 12 o'clock Position and a Pointer Hand
for the Date. 15 Jewel Mechanical Wind Movement running and functioning
nicely. In 1921, the Benrus Watch Company was founded in New York City by brothers Benjamin and Russel Lazrus -- it is said they used the first three letters of their names to come up with the company name of "BEN-RUS.” During World War 2 they were one of the few companies who managed to produce watches for the civilian market. After the war, Benrus used their civilian market knowledge to their advantage and designed fashionable watches with stylish dials, bezels, cases and lug designs that sold in vast numbers. During the 1950s Benrus grew to the second largest watch manufacturer in the U.S.A. (second only to Hamilton.) In today’s market many of the vintage Benrus watches are highly collectable and sort after (and some models are down-right rare and hard to find.) This is a fine example of the post-WW2 calendar wristwatches. It is a Benrus with a quality movement (15 jewels mechanical wind.) The round case consists of a 10K Gold Plated Bezel and a Stainless Steel back and measures 1 1/4” across and 1 3/8" lug to lug. The crown is at the 3 o'clock position. The near mint dial has a silver satin background color and applied Arabic numeral hour markers and is signed Benrus. The fils style hour and minute hands are gold toned. There is a sunken seconds sub-dial at the 6 o'clock position. The day window is located below the 12 o'clock position. There is a date scale (1 through 31) surrounding the outer edge of the dial that is highlighted with a darker silver satin background rim. A pointer hand (black in color with a real neat red tip) indicates the date (and is set by pushing the crown in towards the case.) It has been fitted with a brand new Genuine Lizard 16mm brown strap with a gold toned buckle. The 15 jewel mechanical wind movement is running fine and keeping time. The back case cover is marked 10K Rolled Gold Plate Bezel, Stainless Steel Back and the number 238297. This is a superb '40s calendar wristwatch that is running fine and all components are working as they should. Great for everyday wear or fit for any collection.

There is a 60 minutes scale surrounding the outer edge of the dial. It has been fitted with a brand new IW Genuine Leather strap that is brown in color with stitching around the edges and a chrome toned buckle. Buren - (circa 1960s) - 17 Jewel Mechanical Wind Dress Watch
featuring cool retro-designed lugs. Buren was named after the location of is initial start up at a little village in Switzerland called Buren, located on the banks of the Aare. The firm started in 1842 making watch parts. In 1873 they started making complete watches and F. Suter officially founded Buren and initially called the company F. Suter & Co.. Buren sold many watches and movements with other companies names on them such as Elgin and were often used in Railroad Watches because of their accuracy and reliability. The first ever micro-rotor automatic watch movement was patented by Uhrenfabrik Büren A.G. in the mid 1950s. When their "planetary rotor" automatic movement was released in 1957 in the "Super Slender" line, it was one of the flattest automatics of its time and derivatives of the movement competed with the Universal Geneva micro-rotor for thinnest automatic in the world for many years. Although Hamilton produced Thin-O-Matics wristwatch models with high-grade ETA movements as well, they were so fond of the Buren movement that in 1966 they purchased the company. Hamilton (which became Hamilton International S.A. in 1968) kept producing fully assembled watches under the Buren name (alongside Huguenin (whom they purchased in 1959) and Vantage (purchased in 1962)). They kept Hans Kocher (Buren's chief designer) on as the president of Buren Watch Company S.A. which they owned and operated until Hamilton was in turn purchased by SIHH (later called SMH, now the Swatch Group) in 1971 (a controlling interest was purchased at that point, all watchmaking assets were then completely turned over in 1974). Buren went into liquidation within months and their long 101 year existence came to an end in 1974. Case: Yellow Gold Plated Case - 32mm across and 42mm lug to lug.
