Arcadis - HUGE and RARE French Calendar Watch that Measures 43mm Across and Features Multiple Colored and Rotating Bezels. (circa 1970s) The story surrounding this timepiece is that it was one of the prizes available to choose from as a top finisher of a France to Switzerland Amateur Road-Ralley Car race. This one was picked by the second place finisher and looks to date from the very early 1970's. It is a huge piece that measures 43mm across without the three crowns and the same from top to bottom. The strap is recessed into the case back for a smooth and clean line. The dial is super looking and has a number of different colored rings surrounding it. The very outer edge has a white inner bezel ring that contains the days of the week in French and are repeated around the dial a number of times. Underneath is a silver rotating dial that can be set using the top crown. It reads all of the months of the year, also in French. Next is a red ring or bezel that is rotated by the bottom crown and has the days of the month. Finally the center section is finished in black and contains the raised silver and luminous hour markers and matching baton-style minute and seconds hands. The sweeping seconds hand is silver in color and has a neat sqare end with a luminous coating. There is a silver outer seconds/minutes track and a date window at the 3 o'clock position. Each section is at a different height, with the outer white bezel almost 5mm above the middle black area. The dial is marked "Arcadis" below the 12 o'clock position, and "17 Rubis" above the 6 o'clock position. Turning the watch over we find a screw-down case back that is not inscribed or engraved. Opening the watch we find a very high quality mechanical wind movement that was last serviced in March of 2003 and keeps very good time. It has a polished and beveled finish and the Swiss Hallmark of "CRC" and the caliber number of 960. The watch is fitted with a brand new IW Genuine Leather 20mm padded strap that is black in color with white outer stitching and it has a silver toned buckle. This one really draws a lot of attention. The odds are against ever seeing another one like this piece.

(circa 1976) Buren - Famous Super Slender MicroRotor 25 Jewel Automatic movement, Grand Prix model in close to new old stock condition. (circa 1960s) A Short History of the Buren Watch Company: The Buren Watch Company was named after the location of its initial start up in a little village in Switzerland called Buren, located on the banks of the Aare. The firm started in 1842 making watch parts. In 1873 they started making complete watches and F. Suter officially founded Buren and initially called the company F. Suter & Co. Buren sold many watches and movements with other company’s names on them such as Elgin, and were often used in Railroad Watches because of their accuracy and reliability. The first ever micro-rotor automatic watch movement was patented by Uhrenfabrik Büren A.G. in the mid 1950s. When their "planetary rotor" automatic movement was released in 1957 in the "Super Slender" line, it was one of the flattest automatics of its time and derivatives of the movement competed with the Universal Geneva micro-rotor for thinnest automatic in the world for many years. In the early 1960s Buren was sold in 60 countries. They created many brands for the various markets: Van Buren (South Africa), Steelco and Haste (Mexico) and Dugena and Monza which were sold in the United States. Although Hamilton produced Thin-O-Matics wristwatch models with high-grade ETA movements as well, they were so fond of the Buren movement that in 1966 they purchased the company. Hamilton (which became Hamilton International S.A. in 1968) kept producing fully assembled watches under the Buren name (alongside Huguenin (whom they purchased in 1959) and Vantage (purchased in 1962)). They kept Hans Kocher (Buren's chief designer) on as the president of Buren Watch Company S.A. which they owned and operated until Hamilton was in turn purchased by SIHH (later called SMH, now the Swatch Group) in 1971 (a controlling interest was purchased at that point, all watchmaking assets were then completely turned over in 1974). Buren went into liquidation within months and their impressive and productive 101 year existence came to an end in 1974. Case: 34mm across by 42mm lug to lug - Stainless Steel two piece case. The Crown is at 3 o'clock position (and signed with the Buren symbol. the inside of the screw-off case back cover is marked: 904818, and Acier Inoxydable; the outside of the screw-off case back cover is marked: Buren, grand Prix, Super Slender Automatic and 775401.
