Floor Standing Clocks

English Jewelers Regulator Clock (Floor Standing Custom Built Solid Oak Case.) Rare and Impressive Collectors Item! Heavy duty constructed 8 day movement: pin wheel, weight driven, and dead-beat escapement.
(Circa 1880s)

1880s Jewelers Wall Regulator - Custom Built Solid Oak Case.jpg (120609 bytes)

This is a one-of-a-kind and rare Jewelers Regulator Clock.  The dial, bezel, movement, and temperature compensating pendulum are all original (circa 1880s.)  The impressive and fantastic woodworking craftsmanship of its custom made solid oak floor standing case make this clock a highly attractive collectors piece. The case measures 72-1/2" high x 9" deep x 19-1/4" wide.

The 11-1/2" diameter porcelain Dial is surrounded by a heavy brass bezel which is 14" in diameter. The grid type temperature compensating pendulum with its huge brass pendulum bob (14" in diameter) is very heavy (approx. 34 lbs.)  The single brass weight is approx. 10 lbs. Typically, these fine and rare clocks were extremely accurate to within a few seconds a month, and were hung, or stood, in jeweler's shops, train stations, or banks and acted as the public time piece where people set the time of day on their watches and other clocks.

After a recent service job, where a clock maker completely disassembled the movement, it was discovered that this is an English made clock. The pin wheel is of English design, and the movement has no markings at all (which was not unusual for English clocks of the time period.) The movement plates are very thick and heavy (which they have to be to support the huge and heavy pendulum.)

This is my "Grandmother's Clock," that I purchased from a fellow NAWCC member in May of 2003.  It features a nice moon phase dial (29 1/2 days) with views of a Clipper Ship under full sail at sea, a windmill scene and, of course, a full moon face. It is made from real nice Oak wood and has some ornate decorations. The chimes work on the quarter hour, half hour, three quarter hour and full hour (and at the top of the hour the clock also dongs the number of times for the hour of the day.) It stands 6'-4" tall (from the bottom to the top of the finial) and is 16" wide and 10" deep. There are 3 weights that work on an 8 day cycle that wind the German movement. The movement was disassembled and cleaned in June of 2008 and the clock is running smoothly and keeping accurate time.

  • Grandfather Clock (circa late 1940s/early 1950s) - Beautiful Solid Cherry Wood case with a slide off top bonnet, uniquely designed finials and a bottom section that resembles post-WW2 "radio speaker grills" - (completely restored: a total case detailing and a new dial, weights, pendulum. chime rods and a German-made Hermle Movement custom fitted and installed).

I was surfing the internet in March 2009 and I came across an advertisement on Craigslist that simply stated "Grandfather Clock." For some reason I decided to call about the advertisement and learned that the people who were selling the clock lived very close to me. So, I decided to go over to their house the next evening to see the clock . I immediately liked its design and saw future potential if it were to be restored. (It was in their garage, dirty, dusty, not working, the wood was dry, the weights were dented and scratched up, and most importantly the original dial and movement appeared worn out.) On impulse I made them a modest offer and wound up buying the clock on the spot and brought it home determined to restore it.

I already had a brand new dial, weights, chime rods, pendulum and Hermle movement that I purchased a couple of years ago with the idea of building a custom grandfather clock case, and thought that just maybe I could fit these new works in this case. (I asked a clockmaker friend of mine to look over this clock and he said the movement was worn out and beyond repair (as I already suspected) but, the potential good news was that my new clock works could fit in the case with some wood working adjustments.

So, I built a new seat board rest, removed the original chime rods, fitted my new chime rods to the back of the case and installed the movement, dial, pendulum and weights (this restoration work took me approximately 8 hours with only one trip to Home Depot to purchase some hardware.) I also completely went over the case touching up any blemishes on the wood and treating the entire case, three times, with Formby's lemon oil treatment. The beauty of the cherry wood just jumped out and the case is now in great shape, completely intact with everything working, and sporting a very attractive natural luster look.

The new dial features a nice moon phase (29-1/2 days) with views of a stars, constellations and of course, a full moon face. The chimes work on the quarter hour, half hour, three quarter hour and full hour (and at the top of the hour the clock also dongs the number of times for the hour of the day.) It stands 7'-2" tall (from the bottom to the top of the center finial) and is 19" wide and 10-1/2" deep. There are 3 weights that work on an 8 day cycle that wind the German movement (Hermle Black Forrest Clock 451-050H). This clock is now running smoothly, keeping accurate time and looking very nice.

This is a very nice example of the extraordinary workmanship of a GMK-Fancher Clock Company's casework. I purchased this clock in October 2009 after finding it on a Craigslist advertisement. I had to order new pulleys and a movement winder and it is now looking and working like new. It features a nice moon phase dial (29 1/2 days) with views of stars and a full moon face. It is made from beautiful solid mahogany and cherry wood.

    Additional features include:

    •  2 easy access side doors (mitered and dowelled)

It stands 79" tall (from the bottom to the top of the finial) and is 21" wide and 12-1/2" deep. There are 3 weights that work on an 8 day cycle that wind the German Kieninger movement.

    The GMK-Fancher Clock Company (1979 - 1987)
    By George Mueck
(Additional information appended by Randy Jaye)

    Historical Background (GMK Clock Company)

After several years of discussions Gottfried Kieninger and George Mueck decided to start the GMK Clock Company to manufacture handcrafted grandfather, grandmother, wall and regulator clocks in North America. The year was 1972. The place was Aldingen, in the Black Forest. The name GMK stands for George-Gottfried-Mueck-Kieninger. The company was incorporated in 1975.

Their first project produced the Limited Edition of “The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Centennial Floor and Wall Clocks” created by The Larsens of Canada by Appointment to the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The first GMK clock line consisted of 8 models – Model 103, 105 1010, 2010, 4030, 4031 and 4032. The international furniture and clock designer Moon Choi designed the floor clocks to the vision of George Mueck and Herbert Nahlik. GMK floor clocks featured only the large Kieninger H series weight driven, solid brass triple chime clock movement with solid brass moon-dials, shells and lyre pendulums and tuned brass chimes, produced by Kieninger in the Black Forest. The cases were manufactured locally to the specifications of GMK.

The cases offered specially tuned chime boards and handcrafted clock cases of solid walnut, mahogany, cherry and pine. The cases were hand rubbed to a French polish that included the back panel of each case.

    1975 to 1978

In the first year GMK sold nearly 1,000 clocks to clock shops in the U.S.A. and Canada. In the spring of 1977 GMK created the Lincoln Heritage Collection of 500 clocks for the jewelry stores owned by Mr. Lincoln White of Salt Lake City with stores in Utah and California. The clocks were delivered in September to 20 stores.

    Historical Background (GMK-Fancher Clock Company)

GMK was introduced to the Fancher Furniture Company in Salamanca, N.Y. by John Murphy. George Mueck met with Len and Brian Erickson and after a series of meetings the decision was made to proceed with the creation of the finest handcrafted floor clocks ever offered to the public, anywhere.

The GMK-Fancher Clock Co., Inc was officially founded on November 23, 1979 . The company was co-owned by the GMK Clock Company, which was located at 428 Gage Avenue, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada and the Fancher Chair Co., Inc which was located in Falconer, New York. Both companies owned 50% of the shares. The founding officers of the Company were: C. Leonard Erickson (Chairman), George Mueck (President), John Elsen (Secretary/Treasurer), Bruce Clark (VP Finance) and Brian Erickson (VP Sales).

The Fancher Chair Co., as one of the leaders of fine furniture makers in the world, had the ability to handcraft clock cases that included the features of yesteryears, which were not now available on floor clocks made by any other manufacturer in this century. This was the beginning of the creation of a series of heirloom clocks that captured the hearts of clock collectors in the U.S.A., Canada, the Black Forest and Europe. The standard features included:

    Clock Crowns – 1-1/2”double thickness
Side Door Each cabinet featured two mitered and dowelled side door, for easy access viewing of the Kieninger solid brass weight driven triple chime clock movement.
Back of Cabinet- Each cabinet is completely finished including the back. The back panel provides the access to the Kieninger clock movement.
Dial Plate Frame & Door – Each cabinet contained the classic features of a ¾ ‘’ dial frame plate, a 1 ½” door with wooden glass retainers and coordinated solid brass hardware-The designs added the last touch of quality to these handcrafted heirloom clocks.
Beveled glass, four panels for the treasured look
Solid hardwood posts with co-coordinated crown design
Book matched and hand finishes inside and back cover of clock case
Individually handcrafted base boxes, veneered for a perfect grain pattern
With decorative panels of solid hardwood to enhance the touch of quality
1” Foot levelers under each corner

The GMK-Fancher Clock Company created a collection of twelve new models:

Leicester Model 101-C: Cherry Veneers and Solids with “Olive Ash Burl Accents”
    Eastbourne
Model 102-C: Cherry Veneers and Solids with “Olive Ash Burl Accents”
    Salzburg

    Oxford

Model 301-M: Mahogany Veneers and Solids with “Inlay and Brass Accents”

Model 302-M: Mahogany Veneers and Solids with “Burl Overlays”
    Diploma
t Model 304-M: Mahogany Veneers with “Brass Accents”
    Beaufort
Model 401-W: Walnut Veneers and Solids with “Inlay and Brass Accent”
    Canberra
Model 601-R: Rosewood Veneers and Cherry Solids with “Inlay and Brass Accents”
    Special Paint Finishes
were added in the subsequent years. Model 103 “Marble, Model 104 Hand–Painted Raised Chinoiserie and Model 102 “Gold Trim. They were sold in Limited Editions to clock collectors.

GMK-Fancher then released “The Victoria Registered Limited Edition – MCMLXXX” which was created for the discerning collector who is not only looking for a floor clock that would pride any home, but also an investment for the future – an heirloom in fact. Each “Registered Limited Edition” clock combines the designs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which was perhaps the richest period in the history of floor clocks – with the highest standards of craftsmanship available. The collection was sold prior to release and caused a sensation with clock shops and collectors. Marty Pratt designed the clock, together with Brian Erickson and George Mueck.

GMK-Fancher also introduced two other exceptional floor clocks that never reached production:

The Imperial Model 305M and “The Prince Albert Registered Limited Edition” to follow as the successor to The Victoria (Victoria and Albert). It also produced two Models of Vienna Regulators that are still today unequalled in quality, workmanship and design.

    In Closing

GMK-Fancher Clocks made a major impact with clock collectors in the U.S.A., Canada and Europe. While every dream must end, ours however left a legacy of what can be done by those who seek excellence and love fine clocks. The company made and marketed many fine clocks including tall case clocks, mantle clocks and bracket clocks. As the economy weakened and the market softened for these fine pieces, GMK-Fancher Clock Co., Inc found itself unable to compete with the larger competitors in the field.

Due to a lack of capitalization and continued monetary losses; a certificate of dissolution was filed September 18, 1987 and the company ceased operations.

Although the company is no longer in business, their legacy surely lives on through their superior designed and meticulously handcrafted clocks...

Dai Jin Clock Company (The Time Mfg. Co.) - Rare solid oak table floor clock with a 31 day mechanical movement - purchased in March 2009  (new old stock from the mid 1980s - still in the original factory boxes when purchased.)

This is a rarely seen table floor clock with a very impressive and beautiful solid oak case. It was made in the 1980s by the Dai Jin Clock Co. (The Time Mfg. Co., South Korea.) The clock features a 31 day key wind mechanical movement (balance wheel lever movement which strikes on the hour.) The oak case bezel top (with the glass top lid) lifts off to access the dial and hands.) The top of the case is 27 inches in diameter and it sits 23 inches from the floor to the top. The are two doors in the base of the clock for storage. The entire clock moves smoothly on four roller wheels.

    Shelf Clocks

Seth Thomas movement with a very interesting and detailed "custom" case with all the original glass and the original dial (the workmanship on the case is extraordinary.) It is a 1 day wind that strikes on the hour every hour (circa 1890s)

The story I got from the original owner (a watch and clock maker of over 50 years) was that he repaired a very old Grandfather clock for a friend, in the late Seventies, and as a favor the friend (who was a cabinet maker) decided to make this custom cabinet for him (the original case was in ruins.) The workmanship on this custom made clock case is outstanding. It is made from solid mahogany and cabinet grade mahogany veneer. The cabinet maker used all the original parts from the clock (clock works, pendulum, weights the original winding key, and even the original glass panels.) In addition to the custom case I was especially drawn to this piece because of the portrait of Andrew Jackson that is embossed on the bottom glass panel and in fantastic condition. The original Seth Thomas movement dates to the late 1800s. The case measures 25 3/4" high by 15 1/4" wide by 4 1/4" deep.

The glass and glass paintings are original and in very nice condition, as is the original paper instructions which are still adhered to the back cover and still very clear. I had new period-correct spade hands installed and purchased a new period-correct pendulum.

Brief History of the Atkins Clock Company of Bristol, Connecticut:

Irenus Atkins formed the Atkins Clock Company in Bristol, Connecticut on West Street around 1859. Atkins was in business from 1859 to 1879 and was regarded as an excellent clock designer and clockmaker during his time. The company specialized in the manufacturing of shelf and wall clocks. The business was sold in 1880 to Carlisle and Harry Barnes who continued in the old Atkins clock manufacturing building until about 1884 under the name Barnes Brothers Clock Company. Although there were several clock related businesses with the name Atkins associated with them, this particular company produced some of the most attractive and now highly collectible clocks.

WESTCLOX electic alarm clock. Case is solid, not veneer, black walnut and has a few tiny dings. It has brass feet with red felt pads. The dial is ivory and gold in color. The hands are black. Sweep second hand is gold. Crystal is smooth and clear. The little circle under the twelve is where the alarm time is displayed. There is a winding key in the back - this is for the alarm. Runs smooth and quiet, keeping good time. Just cleaned and oiled. All original, and the cord and plug appear to be a replacement for the original. The plug is split in a way to allow the pins to line up with the holes. Would guesstimate this clock to be from the 1940's. Measures overall 5 1/4" tall by 5 3/4 wide, and 2 3/4" thick.

Jeromeico - "Swinging Pendulum" Clock (guaranteed not to keep accurate time) - an interesting clock to watch as the pendulum swings and wraps around the two side rods. It has a mechanical wind movement (a fixed winding key and time setting knob are located in the back of this clock.)

The solid wood (mahogany) case measures 10-1/4" high x 6-1/4" long x 2-1/2" wide. The dial is 3-1/4" in diameter.
